“Bjóðum fuglum heim” is the new Icelandic motto for the Peatland LIFEline project. A slogan competition was launched on social media for the general public to capture the spirit of Icelandic wetlands, restoration, and the connection to nature.

The author of the slogan is Christian Schultze, Research and International Officer at the Agricultural University of Iceland (AUI). The judging panel consisted of author Andri Snær Magnason, lyricist Bragi Valdimar Skúlason, and the project’s Communications Manager, Bára Huld Beck.

The deadline was 16 January, and a total of 23 suggestions were received. Many witty and fun slogans were among the suggestions, but the judging panel was unanimous in its opinion that the winning slogan was the best fit for the project. The judges’ comments state: “Bjóðum fuglum heim is a beautiful slogan and aligns extremely well with the project’s objectives and its new logo, which features the black-tailed godwit. The slogan is homely and intimate – and sounds good to our ears.”

In addition to the slogan, an Icelandic name has been chosen for the project: Mýralíf. This is considered to be very much in keeping with the project’s purpose, and the winning slogan fits the new name exceptionally well.
